Spelling

Focus on literacy: Spelling describes the key elements of the Department’s policy on the teaching of spelling, from Kindergarten to Year 12. It recognises that learning to spell is a lifelong process that consists of accumulating phonological, visual, morphemic and etymological knowledge about the spelling of English words.

A support document for implementing Focus on literacy: Spelling, this provides teachers with practical information about the systematic approach to teaching and learning of spelling in primary schools with ideas for organising for instruction. Highlighted is a model for spelling which explains the four forms of spelling knowledge: phonological, visual, morphemic and etymological. Supplied with the document is: Spelling… a pathway of development, a wall chart showing the developmental sequence (Stages 1-3).
