LITERACY POLICY AND GUIDELINES

The State Literacy Plan 2006–2008 sets out the directions for literacy achievements and targets. It emphasises the need for all students to have improved outcomes, especially Aboriginal students, those in remote and rural locations and middle years students.

The Plan promotes a consistent state-wide and coordinated approach to the teaching of literacy. It sets out seven strategic action areas for schools, regions and state offices as well as targets and implementation indicators. Link to State Literacy Plan 2006–2008 to access a copy of the Plan.

A new State Literacy Strategy is currently being developed in line with the Office of Schools Plan 2009-2011. The Literacy K-12 Policy was released in 2007 and A continuum of the critical aspects of early literacy development, released Term 1, 2008.

The K-10 Literacy Continuum will be released as a consultative draft in 2008. The Policy and the continuums will support teachers, schools, regions and state office in meeting the demands of the Plan and eventually the new Strategy.
