Checklist for underachievers

Jane Whitmore’s (1980) checklist is a useful checklist for students suspected of underachieving. According to Davis and Rimm (2002) underachievement has been defined as 'a discrepancy between the child’s school performance and some index of his or her actual ability, such as intelligence, achievement, or creativity scores or observational data'.

Teacher checklist that if 10 characteristics are checked then further consideration should be given to the possibility of the child being gifted. It should be remembered that a checklist is an objective assessment and only one aspect of assessing students.  It should be used in conjunction with objective assessments as part of the identification program.
