Curriculum support for NSW Public Schools

Planning and developing SEMP's

There are three important steps in bringing together a schools aims for becoming more sustainable, planning how it can be done and the review process

Planning - The School Environment Management Plan is reflective of a process the school has undertaken to combine the Major Environmental Objectives the school has, the school communities capacity to undertake sustainability action and the natural assets the school and surrounding area has to contribute.  To help schools develop this plan they can:

  • identify where Environmental Education fits in school programs - Curriculum audit
  • state the schools Major Environmental Objectives - Action Plan
  • develop a SEMP
  • review the SEMP to measure and describe their success

Application - The SEMP needs to have at its core an educative process that is best practice, ie has mapped its curriculum application, applies Quality Teaching processes and is student centred.

Assessment - Schools that develop and integrated approach to a school SEMP use the activities and knowledge for student assessment tasks as well as a reflective tool for ‘measuring’ achievement and setting new targets for later sustainability activities.
