Environmental Ed support for your school
Environmental Education support for your school
The DET Environmental Education Team includes The Environmental Education and Zoo Education Centres and the Environmental Education Unit at Curriculum K-12.
Environmental Education and Zoo Education Centres
DET has a network of 23 Environmental Education Centres (EEC) and 2 Zoo Education Centres (ZEC) in NSW, staffed by trained environmental educators.
The EEC and ZEC network supports schools:
- by providing resources to help them integrate environmental education objectives across all key learning areas;
- providing professional development opportunities to teachers;
- implement more sustainable practices in schools (through SEMP’s);
- providing opportunities for student learning and environmental leadership.
The location of the EEC’s in a range of environments allows them a specific environmental focus eg urban environmental studies at Observatory Hill EEC, coastal studies at Bournda EEC. The ZEC’s have a specific focus on wildlife and environmental education.
Where is my nearest Centre and What do EEC’s and ZEC’s Do?
State Government, Local Government (Councils), Non-Government, Business and Community Groups
Successful environmental education programs also use wide networks to assist with guidance and collegial learning, funding and resource support, expertise and materials.
To assist with implementing environmental action with their students, schools may develop a close relationship with the:
- Local Council Environment or Waste Officer
- Local Environmental Agency
- Local water authorities – Sydney Water
- Environmental Community groups
National Environmental Education Strategy
The Australian Government’s Department of the Environment and Heritage is aiming to support schools across Australia in their aim for improved sustainability through a
National Environmental Education Statement and Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative
