There is a wide range of resources available for teachers in supporting the middle years:

Follow-up to ELLA: Two documents (Part 1) and (Part 2) incorporate whole-school planning, implementation of a focused individual assessment (FIA) and use of the programming and strategies handbook.

 of Follow-up to ELLA support bookletThe material provide support to teachers to select and incorporate teaching strategies to support students' subject learning and the development of individual literacy plans (ILPs) where required. The FIA is updated annually based on the current English Language and Literacy Assessment (ELLA).

A guide for school literacy support teams: This resource contains eight sessions of training and development for school literacy support teams to use with teachers in all Key Learning Areas (KLAs). Facilitator's notes, participants' worksheets, photocopiable handouts and overhead transparency masters are provided for each session.

While developed for secondary schools, the first six sessions apply to both primary and secondary texts. Sessions seven and eight provide support materials for each KLA to assist teachers in teaching the literacy skills of their subject content to improve learning outcomes for students. Material is available for programming and the following KLAs: Creative Arts, Design and Technology, English, Geography, History, Languages, Mathematics, PDHPE and Science.

Teaching literacy in...Year 7 subjects: These materials provide subject-specific professional development for DET secondary teachers, demonstrating good practices in literacy teaching. Teachers need to provide explicit instruction for students in meeting the literacy demands of their subject areas. This explicit literacy teaching is integral to the content teaching.

Although these documents were published before the new 7-10 syllabuses, they contain many helpful teaching activities that can easily be adapted to current syllabus applications.

Effective strategies to address the needs of adolescents 13+ experiencing difficulties A review of the literature by Dr Jacqueline Manuel, School of Development and Learning, Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney, March, 2003. This review of the research literature examines the findings of a number of significant contemporary studies that provide evidence of effective strategies for improving adolescents’ reading across the secondary school curriculum.

The Middle Years of schooling: literacy and numeracy. A survey of the literature was developed for Curriculum Directorate, NSW Department of School Education in 2000.
