“This year, in the Year of Learning for Sustainability, we will promote the importance

of environmental issues in every public school and TAFE Institute across NSW, as
well as all NSW Department of Education and Training offices."
Media release from the Hon Verity Firth, MP Minister for Education and Training.
        28 January, 2010

The NSW Department of Education and Training showcased 2010 as the Year of Learning for Sustainability.   The goal of learning for sustainability was to guide us to take actions that resulted in sustainable living for the benefit of present and future generations. Throughout the year the DET had a  spotlight on initatives taken by schools to celebrate sustainability.

A new section has been established on the DET intranet for Environment and Sustainability to provide information and guidance for DET staff on environmental and sustainability planning, action and achievement.  Information about initiatives that celebrated and promoted sustainability in 2010 can be found on this intranet site.

There is also a section specially to support schools to:sun and sunshade

  • provide learning for sustainability to students
  • undertake sustainable management of their grounds and resources.

The showcase raises awareness amongst staff and students of the Department's sustainability responsibilities and the part each individual plays in achieving desired outcomes. The environmental activities will connect with existing programs available both within the Department and the wider community.

The intended outcome and benefit is that staff and students are equipped to contribute to reducing the Department's consumption of energy and water, minimise its waste, improve purchasing choices and enhance both staff and student learning for sustainability.

An important component for schools, TAFE and offices will be to encourage participation in the 'Learning for Sustainability, Award Recognition Program'.
