Sustainable Schools NSW

The Sustainable Schools NSW program provides support for schools when implementing the Environmental Education Policy.  It assists schools in the process of identifying important school or local environmental issues and developing action plans to address them. Developing the action plan involves aspects of student learning, school management and community partnerships.

The Sustainable Schools NSW website includes a scaffold to build your action plan and learning materials to support student investigations and actions.

Beyond the fence initiative

The Sustainable Schools NSW Learning Communities project (Beyond the Fence) is a 12 month pilot project where participating schools from Riverina, New England and Illawarra and South East Regions will be supported to work with their community to collectively identify and investigate a locally relevant sustainability issue, and then develop and implement a plan to address the issue. The project will investigate how schools and communities make decisions and take actions towards a more sustainable future. We envisage case studies from the pilot project will be available from the Sustainable Schools NSW website early 2012.

This project was jointly funded by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW and the Commonwealth Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts and supported by the NSW Department of Education and Training and the Catholic Education Commission.

Students take action at Wakehurst Public School!

Wakehurst Public School undertook an investigation to find the most sustainable and effective solutions for an assembly hall that was too hot for students and staff in summer. The obvious answer was air conditioning, but this raised the question, was there a better and more sustainable approach to cooling the hall?

Wakehurst Public School, with a student population of 330, is located on a ridge within the northern beaches region of Sydney in New South Wales. For the full story download A sustainable approach to thermal comfort. (pdf 184.86KB)
