Sustainable Management

The NSW Department of Education and Training is responsible for managing the use of resources in ways that meet Government sustainability targets, goals and priorities.

To this end, schools need to:

  • sustainably manage the school site and the resources used including energy, water, materials and products
  • manage the schools grounds in a way that facilitates outdoor learning spaces, values natural and cultural heritage, provides amenities for students and staff and contributes to  sustainable water catchments, healthy ecosystems and the conservation of biodiversity
  • use the management of the school site and school resources to engage students in authentic sustainability learning.

This section of the Environmental and Sustainability Education website provides links to information and resources for school leaders to help tackle these issues. Further information is also provided on the DET intranet website for Environment and Sustainability.

Placing this in an educational context, schools should provide opportunities to systematically and explicitly build student knowledge and capabilities to live sustainably. The Sustainable Schools NSW website provides teaching and learning resources, tracking tools, student activities and stories that can be used to inspire creative ways to minimise the impact you, your school, family or community has on the environment.
