| Preparing for the HSC General Mathematics exam This PowerPoint resource is for teachers to use with students or for individual students to use to assist in preparation for the HSC General Mathematics examination. The content covers accessing the syllabus, understanding the performance bands, exam instructions and equipment, the HSC marking process, examiner's comments, resources and how to study. Acknowledgement to Cath Whalan for contributing this resource. Software used Download | HSC outcomes |
Financial Mathematics

| Budgeting Given a set budget to work within, students design or recreate the floor plan for a house including all measurements, using Word or Google SketchUp. Using the measurements on the plan, students calculate the area of the house and make appropriate costings. Students then create a spreadsheet in Excel demonstrating they can afford the house they have designed or adjusting the design until it meets the budget constraints. Software used |

Measurement
Resource | Description | Syllabus outcome |
Prisms Students use Google SketchUp to create and model prisms and investigate faces, vertices and edges to determine 3D shape properties. Software |
M2 (P6), M5 (H6) | |
Volume 1 Students use these learning objects as a revision exercise at the beginning of the topic on volume. Students use Google SketchUp to model, measure and perform volume calculations on 3D shapes. Software used Download |
M2 (P6) | |
Perimeter and area Students compare the size of their school to other schools around them using Google Earth, to practice calculations involving perimeter and area of complex figures. Software Download |
M2 (P6) | |
Pre-surface area This lesson involves students predicting surfaces that may appear hidden and revisiting surface area calculation methods for simple and complex solids. Software used Download |
M2 (P6) | |
| Trigonometry 1 In this activity students use practical measurement skills and ratio calculations to find a pattern linking the ratio of sides of a triangle with the angles. This lesson is designed to develop the concepts of sine, cosine and tangent ratios of angles. Software used Download |
M4 (P6) |
Surface area of composite solids 1 Students use Google SketchUp to model 3D shapes and begin to calculate the surface area of composite solids by rotating them and using the dimensions tool. Software used Download |
M5 (H6) | |
| Surface area of composite solids 2 Creating composite solids in Google SketchUp and calculating the surface area. Software used Download |

Probability
Resource | Description | Syllabus outcome |
Probability spinners In this lesson students use the Spinners series of learning objects to create, test and use spinners to perform probability experiments. The experimental results are then compared to the theoretical probability of each situation. Software used Download |
PB1 (P10, P11) | |
| Probability diagrams Use Freemind or Word to create tree diagrams listing all possible outcomes of a simple event. Software used Download |
PB3 (H4) |
Algebraic Modelling
Resource | Description | Syllabus outcome |
| Pattern | table | rule | graph Students work through the process of, and make connections between, creating a geometric pattern; writing a table of values; plotting points on a graph; and forming a rule using the Bridge builder learning object, a SMART notebook file and plotting points in GeoGebra. Software used |
AM2 (P3, P4) |
Gradients 1 This lesson is the first in a series of lessons which use GeoGebra to explore the concept of gradient. Students discuss reasons why people would need to measure or use gradients and the impact gradients have in specific situations. Software used Download |
AM2 (P3) | |
| Gradients 2 This lesson is the second in a series of lessons which use GeoGebra or SMART Notebook to explore the concept of gradient and calculate the gradient. Software used Download |
AM2 (P4) |
Gradients 3 This lesson is the third in a series of lessons which use GeoGebra to explore the concept of gradient. Software used Download |
