UNICEF's DAY FOR CHANGE
School support in 2006

Students dig deep in Day for Change
On Wednesday October 25 2006 students at an inner west school, Ferncourt Public, spent part of the day carrying water to and from a ‘well’, making damper, having lessons under a tree with an old fashioned blackboard and making skipping ropes from plastic shopping bags.
There was an educational message in these unusual activities, with the whole day dedicated to learning more about what children in developing countries go through, as part of the inaugural UNICEF Day for Change initiative.
It also helped the school raise $280 to continue the good work of UNICEF Australia.
This was a joint venture between UNICEF Australia, the NSW Department of Education and Training and the NSW Teacher’s Federation. Day for Change was conducted in public schools right around the state, with the aim of raising awareness of the needs of vulnerable children around the world and raising funds for health and education resources in developing countries.
Education Minister, Carmel Tebbutt, joined students in their activities at Ferncourt Public School.
“Today is an excellent opportunity for schools and their communities to help change the lives of children who are less fortunate, especially in developing countries,” she said.
“I thank all schools who’ve taken part today in making this difference.”
Ferncourt Public School students enjoyed the UNICEF Day for Change by making damper, collecting water and learning with slate and chalk.
