Cultural Identity
About this unit
| The Cultural Identity: Sharing Our Stories unit incorporates learning in English, PDHPE, and Music. Links to other subjects have been suggested. The unit provides students with an opportunity to explore cultural identity from an Aboriginal perspective and gain an understanding of their own culture and the culture of others. Students will work on a common student task and apply what have learned over the term by producing a student magazine. This unit of work involves an opportunity for students and teachers to use ‘book raps’, available on the Curriculum Support website. | |
Available on the NSW Department of Education and Training Intranet only |
This unit provides an excellent opportunity for schools to work with local Aboriginal community members in the planning and delivery of the crosscurriculum unit. See the new Aboriginal Education and Training policy at https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/policies/students/access_equity/aborig_edu/PD20080385_i.shtml.
Connecting idea – cultural identity
The Aboriginal Studies syllabus defines culture as the accepted and traditionally patterned ways of behaving and a set of common understandings shared by the members of a groups or community. It includes land, language, ways of living and working, artistic expression, relationship and identity.
The key concepts we want students to learn are:
• Cultural identity is important for people’s sense of self and positive relationships with others, and to understand the rights and dignity of all people, and the rejection of discrimination.
• Australia’s Aboriginal heritage and deep knowledge of Aboriginal cultural identity is important to all Australians.
