About dispelling the myths around COGs (Connected outcomes groups)
The COGs were developed by classroom teachers supported by curriculum specialists. Together they worked to identify connections between syllabus outcomes from the HSIE, PDHPE, Creative Arts and Science and Technology KLAs and grouped these into a coherent framework across K-6.
The materials adopt an integrated curriculum approach and have been developed by making connections between syllabus outcomes from across KLAs. This grouping of outcomes is called Connected Outcome Groups – COGs. The materials range from an overview of COGs across
K-6 through to units of work that contain teaching and learning activities, with literacy and numeracy links, as well as assessment strategies.
Schools have been gradually implementing the framework and the units since 2006. Some schools have implemented without support, some are part of the AGQTP project Implementing curriculum planning and assessment frameworks.
As with all initiatives, schools have used a variety of strategies. Some misunderstandings arose around the implementation of COGs. As a result many myths have grown around the framework and the units.
The information on this site attempts to debunk some of these myths. Please take a few minutes to read and view the myth and its reality response and /or take time to peruse the further reading. The videos and quotes are from teachers involved in the AGQTP project who share their journeys as they implement the framework in their schools.
