Penguins count provides strategies for addition and subtraction using tens frames in a vertical and horizontal arrangement. Other components of the learning object encourage combining and partitioning to count a group of penguins.

Eggs in a carton focuses on the subtraction concept. Eggs are taken out of a carton containing either 6 or 12 eggs and students calculate how many eggs are left in the carton.

Penguin pins

Penguin pins focuses on the subtraction concept. Penguins disappear into the water and students calculate how many penguins are still standing, and how many are missing.

This learning object involves placing the digits 1 to 9 into circles to that each line of three addes up to a total of 15. The second and third challenge requires each line of three to total 18 and 12.

SMART Notebook - Add two dice

Add two dice
Early Stage 1  – Stage 1
Students in turn roll two dice and find the total. After adding the two dice the student takes a numeral card corresponding to the total. The activity continues until all the cards have been taken. If a player rolls a number that has already been taken, the player's turn is forfeited.

Starting from a given number, discs are dropped into a bucket one by one, counting on from the given number.

Students roll a dice to select a starting number. A spinner is used to determine the number to add on to this starting number.

Using the numerals 1-9, students begin by placing the centre number first, then drag a different number into each circle so that each line of three adds up to a total of 15. The second challenge requires each line of three to total 18 and the third challenge a total of 12.
