WelcomeBest Start is a new government initiative to increase support for the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy for our youngest students.
There are three components to Best Start: - A new statewide Kindergarten entry assessment
- The expansion of Reading Recovery, an early literacy intervention for students in the early years of schooling. This will see an additional 200 Reading Recovery teachers assigned, over the next 4 years, to work with 2000 students in approximately 200 schools. Eight additional regional based Reading Recovery tutors will also be appointed
- The provision of time to support expert literacy and numeracy leaders will be made to infants, primary and central schools. These leaders will be used to increase each school's capacity to support newly appointed teachers, build teacher capacity and expertise in the diagnosis of student literacy and numeracy needs and lead the use of explicit teaching strategies in literacy and numeracy teaching. They will also support the implementation of school actions in the State Literacy and Numeracy Plans.
