Understanding moderation

Moderation is a process which ‘involves educators in a collaborative discussion of student work based on predetermined assessment criteria’. The benefits of successful moderation include:

  • A better understanding of assessment
  • Knowing what constitutes a good assessment task
  • Understanding how to assess based on the criteria of the task
  • Being able to assess to a standards framework
  • Appreciating why it is important to have a good understanding of the syllabus(es)
