Implementing the curriculum planning framework: COGs

About the project

Vale Shanye Krauth

Shanye Krauth, Senior Curriculum Officer AGQTP, had been ill for some time. Sadly Shan passed away suddenly at her home over the weekend at the end of January, 2009. Shan has had an enormous impact on all the schools that have been part of AGQTP COGs and without her passion, enthusiasm, integrity and dedication to quality teaching and learning, COGs would not be so highly regarded and the success it is today. Shan loved meeting all the teachers in the project and working with them. She will be sadly missed by everyone with whom she has had contact. COGs will continue as will her spirit of encouragement and positive thinking.

Eltis report - Time to teach time to learn

The Eltis report made a number of recommendations which had implications for teachers and their manageability of teaching primary students. The full report is available here

The NSW Department of Education and Training accepted all the recommendations of the report and in response, produced the policy, Curriculum planning and programming, assessing and reporting to parents K – 12. To support the policy, the Curriculum K-12 Directorate developed the Curriculum planning and assessment frameworks.

The foundation of the curriculum planning frameworks were identifying the connections between the syllabus outcomes and placing them in groups.

cogs posters Two posters show how the outcomes for all KLAs have been connected.

While English and Mathematics remain listed separately due to their primacy, they have been connected through literacy and numeracy to the connected outcomes groups.
These connected outcomes groups, now referred to as COGs:

  • naturally connect through similar content, processes or skills
  • make programming manageable by connecting similar content, processes and skills
  • connect ideas for students to maximise their learning
  • allow the curriculum to be taught more efficiently
  • ensure a balanced coverage of all key learning areas.

With funding over4 years (2006 – 2009) from the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme (AGQTP), a small team based at Curriculum K-12 Directorate supports the implementation of COGs in K-6 schools across the state. Over 200 schools have been involved in the project so far. The results of their many and varied achievements are reflected in the development of multi-stage COGs units, in the support they have provided to colleagues in their own schools and beyond and in the multimedia presentations on this web site.
