Curriculum planning and assessment frameworks; guided tour

 

Overview

 

The new DET policy on curriculum planning, assessing and reporting to parents has meant changes for schools. These changes have been brought about by a major report on outcomes assessment and reporting and Federal legislation governing funding to schools.

 

Federal legislation

The new policy needed to take into account 2004 Federal Government legislation and 2005 regulations. The legislation and regulations have specific requirements for components of written reports to parents.

 

The legislation provides funding to school authorities in each state and territory.

Outcomes assessment and reporting

Time to teach time to learn is the evaluation report by Professor Ken Eltis on the demands created for teachers as a result of the introduction of outcomes assessment and reporting. The report presents the findings of the evaluation and concludes with a set of recommendations. The report was released in November 2003 following which the NSW Government accepted all recommendations.

 

The Eltis report commended the excellent work taking place in schools in managing "the complex issues arising from new practices in relation to outcomes assessment and reporting".  The report did however recognise the need for "clear specification of just what is mandatory for teachers in relation to curriculum, assessment and reporting outcomes and where they have more freedom."
